A Rolex is a big purchase, and buying pre-owned is often the smartest way to do it. It can get you a reference that's hard to find new, a discontinued model, or simply a better price. But the pre-owned market also has fakes, watches built from mismatched parts, and sellers who overstate condition. If you're shopping in Annapolis, Crofton, or anywhere in Anne Arundel County, here's how to buy with confidence.
1. Know the exact reference number
One Rolex model name can cover several very different watches. A "Submariner Date," for example, could be the current Ref. 126610LN or the previous Ref. 116610LN, and the two differ in case, movement, and price. Search and compare by reference number, not just the model name, so you know exactly what you're looking at and what it should cost.

A Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 126610LN.
2. Ask about box and papers
A "complete set" usually means the original box, the warranty card, and the manuals. The warranty card shows the date of sale and ties the watch to its serial number, which adds confidence and resale value. A watch without papers isn't automatically a bad buy, but it should be priced accordingly and checked more carefully.
3. Check that the numbers match
The serial number on the watch should match the one on the papers. On modern Rolex watches, it's engraved on the rehaut, the inner ring around the dial. If the numbers don't match or the seller won't show them, walk away.
4. Be honest about condition
Ask whether the case and bracelet have been polished, look for bracelet stretch and deep scratches, and ask when the watch was last serviced and by whom. Close-up photos help, but nothing beats seeing a watch in person.
5. Understand the warranty
Modern Rolex watches come with a five-year international guarantee that starts on the date shown on the warranty card. A recent pre-owned watch with its card may still have some of that coverage left.
6. Buy from someone you can actually meet
Online marketplaces and social media groups are full of "deals" that aren't. A dealer with a physical location, a phone number you can call, and a public track record of reviews gives you real recourse if something isn't right.
